"X is Y"

Description: Richard Kern was an underground filmmaker who specialised in transgressive themes, and images that are violent and erotic at the same go. Like Kenneth Anger, who seems to have been an influence on him, Kern is less interested in coherent narrative than in presenting themes and images that will provoke us, shock us and ... possibly ... arouse us.

"X is Y" is a very short film, consisting of images of young women handling automatic handguns and rifles. The women's physical appearances and the overall direction are clearly intended to eroticise the firearms whilst emphasising the phallic aspect of the weapons. The film's title is not explained, but it apparently has a genetic basis: X is the female chromosome and Y the male chromosome. Apparently, Kern is suggesting that handguns are 'supposed to be' male objects, yet here are these very sexy and unquestionably female women engaged in the 'male' activities of gun-love and shooting.

"X is Y" features some thrash music by a band with the appropriate name Cop Shoot Cop. Kern shows some genuine directorial talent within his narrow self-appointed genre, and the women in this movie are very delightful to look at

Death Valley '69

Description: Death Valley '69 is a video for the Sonic Youth song of the same name. The song origionally appeared on the "Bad Moon Rising" album from way back in 1985, at about the same time as Kern was making those Super 8 gross-out masterpieces starring the lovely "Lung Leg" - I swear I'm not making this up - who later graced the cover of the SY album "EVOL." There is a great gorey sequence in the DV '69 music video that looks like pieces of liver or stomach (or something...) plopted down in front of a very crudly "killed" Steve Shelley (SY's drummer at the time the video was shot). Kern's very distinctive Super 8 style (gittery, high contrast, EXTREMELY low budget, and super gross-out) that was - and I know this is hard to believe - really, really popular in the New York art scene in the eighties is captured here in it's full glory.

horoscope


Description: 'Horoscope' is one of the short movies made by underground filmmaker Richard Kern. All of Kern's movies are unusual: intentionally transgressive, and often violent. But 'Horoscope' is unusual by Kern's standards because it's LESS unusual than usual, for him. There's very little transgression, and the mood is (by Kern's standards) sweet-natured. Typically, Kern's eroticises the female body: on the rare occasions when his films feature erotic male images (as in 'Submit to Me'), those images are usually briefer and less intense than female-centred images in the same film. 'Horoscope', unusually (perhaps uniquely) for Kern, features more male than female nudity.

Holly Adams plays an attractive but rather repressed young woman who shambles homeward from her dull office job, checks her horoscope (not very promising) and promptly falls asleep in front of the tv. Two naked young men appear in her living room and begin dancing naked for her pleasure. I assumed that this was a sexual fantasy the woman was having in her dream state, but the film's structure is so illogical that there's no way to be certain of this: perhaps these naked men have actually teleported into her flat, just for the hell of it.

The men dance for the woman for a while, and then eventually she joins them and they all have fun together. As this is a Kern film, I was expecting gunshots or bloodshed or both, but these things don't happen. A surprisingly pleasant film from this unusual director. It's rare for a male underground filmmaker to make a movie in which male characters cater for a female protagonist's sexual fantasies, instead of just the other way round.


my nightmare


Description: Richard Kern shows us once again why he is the best Goth in cinema. This film, "my nightmare" revolves around the sexual perversion of a photographer. Who masturbates while imagining a rough sexual intercourse with his model. It at first may seem like simple pornography until it becomes sadistic and disturbing. Eeerier the music becomes and more violent the illusion disintegrates. The film ends with the actual model coming into his home, not in the dream, and he attempts to have sexual intercourse with her. Yet once he tries, he is slapped and rejected. Truly I recommend this film because of its great cinematography, ironic and dark concepts as well as disturbing images.

A touching story of a family dysfunction that turns into a homicidal mess.
It should've gotten an Academy award!

Sewing Circle

Sewing Circle provides one of those rare truly morbid curiosities. From Richard Kern, the master of over the top exploitation Super-8 adventures comes this gem of mutilation and pain endurance. The whole thing is probably no longer than eight minutes and consists of two body piercers sewing another womans vagina shut. Really, that's all that happens. It looks pretty painful, but at the same time it is so damn fascinating that you can't take your eyes off it. Kern is very good at doing this sort of thing to his viewers. Somehow I found this less disturbing then Kern's other short which features a transvestite getting simultaneously plooked (if you don't know what "plooked" means then you really should pick up Frank Zappa's Thing Fish album) by a girl with a strap-on while giving head to another strap-on equiped lady.



Submit to Me (1985)



For those familiar with Kern you know what to expect. And of course this ain't for mainstream fans or anything. This is a MUST for all arty or not bondage fans. Submit to me is a fit title for this sexy video clip. 'nuff said!


Manhattan Love Suicides (1985)



The Manhattan Love Suicides are a series of short films by Richard Kern: Stray Dogs, Woman At The Wheel, Thrust In Me, & I Hate You Now. This is a brief description of each-

"Stray Dogs" concerns an artist being followed thru the streets by an obsessive young man (a terrific David Wojnarowicz) who tries to gain his attention. He follows the artist back to his apartment and begins literally tearing himself apart in frustration - at this point the artist laughs at him & begins to sketch his dying body. This is probably my personal favorite in the series.

"Woman At The Wheel" follows a woman who takes her boyfriends (1 at a time) for a drive - but they only spark arguments & insist on taking the wheel. She eventually beats one of them senseless & wrecks the car.

"Thrust In Me", stars Nick Zedd as both the suicidal girl and her thrusting boyfriend. Includes a great cameratrick orgasm of monumental proportions.

"I Hate You Now" features Tommy Turner as a facially deformed drug dealer and Amy Turner as his girlfriend. The film repeatedly taunts the notion of "deformity" & "ugliness" before ending in a serious iron-burn & a barbell suicide.
